1 Killed, 3 Injured In Panorama City Apartment Fire

PANORAMA CITY (CBSLA.com) — One person was killed and three others injured in an apartment fire Monday morning in Panorama City.

The fire was reported at 8:39 a.m. at a two-story complex in the 8800 block of Tobias Avenue, the Los Angeles Fire Department said.

Neighbors reported hearing at least one explosion coming from within the unit.

The fire was knocked down by 8:53 a.m.

"They had to fight fire basically from the hallway all the way in to get a full knock down," Los Angeles City Fire Battalion Chief Jack Wise said.

A Hispanic woman in her 30s was found dead inside a second-floor apartment, officials said. Her identity was not released.

"She's just looking out the window. The black smoke was coming and then all the sudden . . . . when the second explosion happened, she just dissapeared," the witness said.

A 14-year-old boy and two Los Angeles Police Department officers who were first on scene were all transported to a local hospital for smoke inhalation.

The boy, who neighbors suggest lived in the apartment, is reported to be doing well.

Arson investigators were trying to determine the cause of the fire.
