1 Dead, 3 Critically Injured In Palmdale Crash Between 3 Motorcyclists, Alleged DUI Driver

PALMDALE (CBSLA.com) — One man was killed and three others critically injured Saturday afternoon when a vehicle crashed into three motorcyclists in Palmdale.

The crash was allegedly caused by a motorist under the influence of drugs, according to a California Highway Patrol officer.

The accident occurred just before 3:15 p.m. at the intersection of Bouquet Canyon and Elizabeth Lake Road, said CHP Officer Tony Polizzi.

"The male driver of the vehicle that struck the motorcycles was later placed in custody by CHP officers," Polizzi said. "He's currently being evaluated by one of our drug recognition evaluators."

On Sunday, officials identified the deceased was Peter Volgen, a 58-year-old Oxnard resident. Volgen was declared dead at the scene of the accident.

The driver of the car was identified as 19-year-old Jose Gutierrez of Palmdale.

The three injured bikers were taken to Antelope Valley Hospital. Authorities identified the victims as Danny Rincon, 41, of Westlake Village; Richard McBee, 60 and Patty McBee, 55, both of Moorpark.

The crash remains under investigation, said Polizzi.

Gutierrez suffered minor injuries in the crash. He is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail.

He is scheduled to appear Tuesday at the Antelope Valley Municipal Court.
