Gas Line Break Prompts Evacuations In East LA

EAST LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Residents were evacuated Monday after a construction crew ruptured a gas line, the sheriff's department said.

Authorities said as many as 100 people were evacuated from more than 50 homes in the area after the break was reported in the 300 block of South Gerhart Ave.

Evacuees were bused to an evacuation center at Garfield High School, according to sheriff's officials.

A third-party construction crew was installing a water line when the gas main was ruptured, according to Denise King of Southern California Gas Company.

The leak was repaired around 7 p.m. but crews from the utility company continued with repairs, according to a second company official.
