Cleanup Effort Underway After Rains Push Trash, Runoff To Beaches

SANTA MONICA (CBSLA.com) — Volunteers were on the beaches in Santa Monica and Playa del Rey Thursday as part of a cleanup effort following Wednesday's storm.

Cleanup was underway after garbage flowed down storm drains to the ocean.

"All this stuff comes inland from storm drains miles and miles up," said Matthew King of Heal the Bay.

"A single rain storm, there's 10 billion -- that's with a 'b' -- 10 billion gallons of runoff flows into the ocean," King said.

Activists are trying to raise awareness to encourage people to dispose of trash properly.
