LONG BEACH (CBSLA.com) — The California Highway Patrol is investigating after a woman was killed Wednesday in a multi-vehicle accident on the 710 Freeway.

The four-vehicle collision, which included a Caltrans sweeper train and a big rig, happened just before 11 a.m. in the southbound lanes just north of the 405 Freeway.

A SigAlert was issued closing the #2, 3 and 4 lanes for more than six hours. CBS2’s Amy Johnson reports CHP reopened lanes to traffic at approximately 5 p.m.

CHP officer Jason Lopez said all four vehicles were driving in the right lane when traffic came to a halt just before the 405 transition roads and the Caltrans sweeper train, traveling at 50 mph, failed to stop.

“The Caltrans vehicle collided with the Honda Civic. The Honda Civic was then pushed forward into a blue Toyota and then the blue Toyota was pushed into the big rig. The Toyota Camry was overturned during the course of the collision and the driver of the silver Honda Civic sustained fatal injuries,” Lopez said.

The female driver of the blue Toyota Camry sustained multiple injuries and remained hospitalized at press time.

It’s not clear if the wet weather played a role in the accident. Investigators say it was not raining at the time of the crash but it had rained earlier in the morning.

“The road definitely could have been slick. Any amount of rain, especially the first rain, can cause the roads to be slippery,” Lopez said.
