Win Great Prizes By Carpooling, Taking Public Transportation During 'Rideshare Week'

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Call a friend, tag a coworker or get your spouse involved! Rideshare Week is taking place Oct. 7 through Oct. 11, and if you participate, you could win a prize.

During Rideshare Week, which takes place during the first week of October, all commuters are urged to carpool, vanpool, take the bus or train, walk, or ride a bike to work. Workers who opt to telecommute can also participate.

Southern California leads the nation in traffic congestion and, consequently, in air pollution, according to Metro.net. Ridesharing is also a way to save money on gas, car insurance and vehicle wear and tear, according to the Ventura County Air Pollution Control District.

The Orange County Transportation Authority is handing out more than a dozen of prizes from local restaurants and business to commuters who pledge during Rideshare Week. IE511.org is also offering a variety of prizes, including hotel stays, gift cards and an iPad Mini.

Hundreds of employers will be hosting events at work sites promoting Rideshare Week. Workers can participate by filling out a pledge form and returning them to their employers.

Pledge forms are available for residents of Los Angeles and Orange counties, along with those in the Inland Empire.
