CASTAIC (CBSLA.com) — An off-duty La Habra police officer was shot in Castaic by a suspect who turned the officer’s gun on the officer, according to authorities.

Officials said they were notified of the shooting about 5:15 a.m.

The incident happened on the Golden State (5) Freeway near Templin Highway.

Detectives said the off-duty officer was involved in a traffic collision with another motorist.

The officer and the suspect got involved in a physical altercation.

Authorities said the suspect was able to gain control of the officer’s firearm and shot him with his weapon.

The gun has not been recovered.

Officials did not release suspect or vehicle information.

The officer’s condition is unknown, said Sheriff’s Sgt. Diane Hecht.
