Deadly Officer-Involved Shooting Reported In Long Beach

LONG BEACH (CBSLA.com) — Long Beach Police shot and killed a suspect they said fought with an officer Thursday evening.

The shooting occurred around 5:15 p.m. in the 2300 block of East 17th Street, according to Long Beach Police Sgt. Aaron Eaton.

Complaints about drug dealing in the neighborhood led a plainclothes officer to investigate the area when he says the suspect approached him.

A fight between the suspect and the officer then broke out, said Eaton.

The officer said the suspect punched him.

When the officer allegedly identified himself as being with law enforcement, he said the suspect continued to reach for his waistband.

Fearing the suspect had a weapon, the officer shot and wounded the man.

The suspect was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, said Eaton.

Officials said they found a metal bar -- tucked into the suspect's waistband -- at the scene of the shooting.

The shooting will be investigated by the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office as well as the county Office of Independent Review.

The Long Beach Press-Telegram said tonight's OIS was the third in Long Beach in less than a week.
