SILVERADO (CBSLA.com) — A 16-year-old girl was killed and several others were injured Monday morning in a two-car crash in Orange County.

The rollover collision happened around 1:45 a.m. at Silverado Canyon and Santiago Canyon roads in Silverado, the California Highway Patrol said.

Antonio Escamilla, 19, was allegedly driving under the influence at the time of the crash.

Lizzie Johnson, a 16-year-old junior at Irvine High School, was ejected from the car.

“I kept telling her to put on her seat belt, but she wouldn’t listen,” a friend named “Kylie” said.

Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene.

“There was some beer found on the scene,” CHP Officer Todd Kovaletz said. “The driver of the second car was placed under arrest for felony DUI and felony vehicular manslaughter. He is currently at the hospital being treated for his injuries.”

Escamilla suffered major injuries from the accident but is expected to survive.

Escamilla, who had three passengers in his car, was reportedly following friends in another vehicle through the canyon when a deer ran into the road. The 20-year-old driver of the first car slammed on his breaks, and Escamilla’s car ran off the road, hit a tree and flipped over, according to the CHP. Johnson was not wearing a seatbelt when she was thrown from the backseat, officials said.

The other five people suffered minor injuries.

“I believe the plan will be to seek out those who may have known Lizzie as well as anybody who might be hit hard with her passing,” Ian Hanigan of the Irvine Unified School District said.

Four students from Irvine High School were killed in an accident on May 27 in Newport Beach.
