Man Fatally Shot After Allegedly Attacking Deputy Near Ventura

VENTURA (CBSLA.com) — A man who allegedly attacked a female deputy in an unincorporated area in the city of Ventura has died after being shot.

The Ventura County sheriff's office said in a department statement that the unidentified man in his early 20s was shot about 4:53 p.m. Saturday after he allegedly physically attacked the deputy.

A witness told authorities that the suspect had punched the deputy in the face. He then allegedly tried to grab her gun.

"Injured, bleeding, and fearing for her life, the deputy drew her firearm and shot the suspect, who later died at a local hospital," the statement said.

The deputy initially responded to Ventura Avenue and Fraser Lane after receiving a call of a suspect shouting and waving his hands, according to the statement.

After arriving on scene, the deputy made contact with the suspect who authorities say didn't respond to anything she said.

The suspect's identity was withheld pending notification of his next of kin, authorities said.
