South Bay Pursuit Leads To Officer-Involved Shooting, Car In Canal

TORRANCE (CBSLA.com) — A pursuit early Thursday morning led to an officer-involved shooting and a female suspect crashing her vehicle into a ditch, Torrance police said.

The pursuit began around 1:45 a.m. when officers were following a reckless driver in the Palos Verdes Estates area, officials said.

The short chase continued through Torrance with the suspect eventually stopping her vehicle near Torrance Boulevard, east of Main Street, in Carson.

"As the lone female occupant of the vehicle was taken into custody, she put the car in reverse. She attempted to ram the officers who were taking her into custody, an officer-involved shooting occurred," Sgt. Robert Watt said.

The suspect, a 43-year-old woman from Corona, then put the car in drive, went through several chain link fences and crashed her vehicle in the Dominguez Channel, Watt added.

The unidentified woman was not wounded by gunfire, but was transported to local hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries and later arrested.

It was unclear if she was driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

No other injuries were reported.
