Big Rig Hits Overpass, Prompts Closure Of WB I-10 In Fontana

FONTANA (CBSLA.com) — A big rig hit an overpass on the 10 Freeway in Fontana Thursday, which prompted the closure of the westbound side of the interstate.

A Caltrans spokesperson said the truck, which was carrying tractor equipment, slammed into the wood and steel beams being used in the construction of the Citrus Avenue bridge around 5 p.m.

KCAL9's Tom Wait reported that the westbound lanes were closed until about 9:30 p.m. as crews examined and repaired the bridge.

Citrus was also closed in both directions.

Traffic was backed up for miles.

There were no reports of any injuries.

The incident marks the second time in five months the bridge has been hit by a passing truck.

"I think it's really just a coincidence. It's a high-volume freeway. We can't control folks that carry loads that are outside the legal limits. It just happens to be that it happened here twice because we have something going on," said Timothy Watkins of the San Bernardino Associated Governments.
