LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A Rally to Improve Birth, organized by a non-profit, was held Monday in downtown Los Angeles.

The United States boasts the most expensive maternity care, about $86 billion annually, according to a report by Amnesty International.

“Nine out of 10 women are receiving care that increases harm to them and their babies,” Dawn Thompson, president of Improving Birth.org, told KNX1070’s Margaret Carrero.

Even with expensive maternity care, American women have a greater risk of pregnancy-related deaths than those in more than 40 other countries.

“So what we’re wanting is for healthcare decisions to be made by the woman based on information provided by her healthcare provider that is based on science and what actually makes sense for her particular circumstances,” birth rights attorney Adeola Adeseun said.
