The Lummis Home, also known as El Alisal, is an ideal version of the arts and crafts architectural movement, as it was built entirely from found items including stones from the nearby dry stream. This home is a must-see for lovers of unique architectural styles or just those who love to browse one-of-a-kind buildings. No two doors or windows in the home are the same, and no two rooms are built on the same level.
The eccentric Charles Fletcher Lummis was inspired by his journey from Ohio to California –– by foot! He was enamored by the Native people he met along his way, and used a lot of the inspiration gleaned from people he encountered during his travels while building his home by hand. The home was completed around 1910, and features gardens and local sycamore trees around its premise. One of the most impressive sights in the Lummis Home is the fireplace, which was carved by Mount Rushmore creator Gutzon Borglum. The home is now used as the headquarters for the Historical Society of Southern California, and it is open to the public for free tours Monday through Friday.
