'Snoop Lion' Calls On Young Gardeners After City Council Lifts Ban

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Young Angelenos are being encouraged to take part in community gardening following a City Council decision to stop enforcement of an ordinance that prohibited gardening along city parkways.

KNX 1070's Margaret Carrero reports an unlikely rap icon is teaming up with a beverage company to encourage young gardeners — and help the community at the same time.

Rapper Snoop Dogg, a.k.a Snoop Lion, has partnered with L.A.-based soda producer, Reed's Inc., for the Adopt-a-Garden contest, which showcases four model community gardens serving schoolchildren, underserved neighborhoods, and urban community members.

The winning garden will earn $2,000 and a chance to spearhead Snoop Lion's Mind Gardens initiative in the United States.

Those in the running are Little Green Fingers, a program aimed at addressing obesity among local youth; LA CAN Rooftop Gardens, which feeds the homeless on Skid Row; Enrich LA, which builds gardens at public schools, and Walter Reed Middle School's Culinary Academy.

The contest was underway following a City Council vote (PDF) on Aug. 13 to suspend prohibiting vegetable gardens on city parkways.

Cast your vote for your favorite garden on Reed's Facebook page or at Snoop's Mind Gardens Project page.
