SAN BERNARDINO (CBSLA.com) — Several burglars seemingly had a change of heart after targeting a Southern California charity.

The thieves stole a number of computers from the Sexual Assault Services Center, based in San Bernardino.

Hours later, however, the items were returned, along with a letter of apology.

San Bernardino Police say the burglars broke into an outside utility closet before entering the center’s offices through the ceiling.

According to police, six computers with hard drives, a laptop, and a bag of valuables were stolen from the non-profit, where abused women go to get help.

The center’s executive director Candy Stallings received a call from her alarm company, reporting the activity.

“The alarm company told me there was lots of motion going on in this room and throughout the three suites,” Stallings said.

The police were called, but by the time they arrived on the scene, the thieves had gone.

Two hours later, Stallings received another call, this time from police, saying there was suspicious activity at the same address.

When Stallings returned to the center, she found a shopping cart with the stolen property.

Inside the laptop was a written note that read: “We had no idea what we’re taking. Here your stuff back. We hope that you guys can continue to make a difference in people’s lives. God bless.”

Stallings, meanwhile, suggests the thieves may have had a change of heart when they discovered who they were stealing from.

“I think they know what they were doing,” Stallings said. “I just don’t think they knew who they were doing it to.”
