ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Los Angeles Angels second baseman Howie Kendrick’s sprained left knee will be re-evaluated at the end of the week.

The Angels announced Tuesday they wouldn’t immediately put Kendrick on their disabled list, but recalled newly acquired infielder Grant Green from Triple-A Salt Lake to fill in. Green was in Los Angeles’ starting lineup Tuesday night against the Texas Rangers, batting eighth and playing second base.

Los Angeles optioned right-hander Daniel Stange to Salt Lake.

The Angels acquired Green from Oakland last week in a trade for starting third baseman Alberto Callaspo. Green, who made his major league debut with the Athletics last month, went 8 for 24 in three games with Salt Lake.

Green is an Anaheim native who played three seasons at the University of Southern California. He immediately became one of the top prospects in the Angels’ depleted farm system.

Kendrick was injured during the fifth inning of the Angels’ 5-2 loss to Texas on Monday night when he landed awkwardly on his left leg while sprinting to catch a tailing popup by Elvis Andrus. Kendrick got hurt when he attempted to avoid sliding right fielder Colin Cowgill coming toward him.

An MRI exam Tuesday revealed Kendrick hadn’t done more serious damage to his knee.

Kendrick is in the midst of a strong season for the Angels, who appear all but certain to miss the playoffs for the fourth straight year. His 126 hits are second-most in the majors among second basemen behind Dustin Pedroia, and he had a nine-game hit streak before going 0 for 2 Monday.

The Angels also announced left-hander Sean Burnett will have surgery Wednesday on a torn flexor tendon in his left elbow. Burnett, who had already been ruled out for the season, appeared in just 13 games for the Angels, joining Ryan Madson as a hugely disappointing free-agent signing meant to patch Los Angeles’ porous bullpen.

Burnett had ligament replacement surgery in 2005. He signed a two-year deal with the Angels last winter after 3 1/2 seasons with Washington.

The oft-injured Madson was released by the Angels on Monday after failing to pitch in a game with his new club.
