Dodgers Fall To Yankees After Costly 9th Inning Error

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Pinch-hitter Lyle Overbay singled in the go-ahead run with two outs in the top of the ninth inning, helping the New York Yankees to a 3-0 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday night.

Overbay, who drove in both New York runs in a 3-2 loss on Tuesday, singled on a 1-2 pitch from Paco Rodriguez. Robinson Cano scored after reaching on a fielder's choice groundout.

The Yankees added two more runs on an error by Dodgers second baseman Mark Ellis, whose two-out RBI single drove in the winning run Tuesday.

Ronald Belisario (4-6) got two outs in the ninth inning, but took the loss. He walked Derek Jeter and pinch-hitter Ichiro Suzuki, who both scored after Belisario was relieved by Rodriguez.

Suzuki and Overbay scored when Ellis dropped a fly ball by Jayson Nix in shallow right field. Yasiel Puig came running in as Ellis was tracking the ball with his back to the rookie, whose left hand struck Ellis' glove as the ball dropped.

Boone Logan (3-2) got the win in relief.

Mariano Rivera pitched the ninth to earn his 34th save in 36 chances in his farewell season.

Dodgers manager Don Mattingly was ejected in the ninth apparently for arguing a checked swing call on Overbay.

Former Dodgers pitcher Hiroki Kuroda and current Los Angeles ace Clayton Kershaw dueled for much of the game, with neither allowing a run. Both gave up five hits -- all singles.

Kuroda struck out eight and walked one in seven innings. Kershaw struck out five and walked none in eight innings.

Jeter went 0 for 7 with a walk in the two-game series.

Both teams had scoring chances in the seventh and eighth innings.

The Yankees had runners on first and second with two outs in the eighth when Brett Gardner flied out to left field for the third out.

The Dodgers had runners on first and second with two outs in the seventh before Skip Schumaker struck out swinging to end the inning.
