LAWNDALE (CBSLA.com) — Fire officials say six cats and two birds were killed early Tuesday morning in a South Bay house fire.

The fire was reported around 3:20 a.m. in the 4200 block of 167th Street in Lawndale, the Los Angeles County Fire Department said.

Officials believe the fire may have started in a detached garage behind the residence and quickly spread to the home.

“I just woke up and saw orange flames crackling right outside my bedroom window,” the male homeowner said.

Two homeowners were able to escape without injuries, however, six of their 10 cats, as well as two birds, were killed, the LACoFD said.

The fire was knocked down at 3:37 a.m., according to officials.

The cause of the blaze was under investigation.
