VENTURA (CBSLA.com) — Authorities say a large Rottweiler attacked and mauled a 5-year-old girl Thursday evening in Ventura.
The attack occurred in front of a Starbucks located in the 600 block of E. Main Street, according to officials.
Ventura Police said they received “multiple” 911 calls about the 7:23 p.m. mauling.
When first responders arrived at the scene, the dog and child were separated. Witnesses told police the girl and a parent walked by the dog when it lunged at her.
The dog reportedly bit into the girl’s abdomen and lifted her off the ground where it shook her violently.
The dog’s owner was able to pry its mouth off the child.
The victim was taken to Ventura County Medical Center where she received medical treatment for several puncture wounds and bruising.
Animal Control arrived at the scene of the attack and took the Rottweiler into custody.
