'Marketing Mix' Becomes Third Female To Win Sunset Handicap, Wins At Hollywood Park

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Marketing Mix became the third female to win the $100,250 Sunset Handicap, defeating defending champion Dhaamer by a length on closing day of the spring-summer meet at Betfair Hollywood Park.

Ridden by Hall of Famer Gary Stevens, Marketing Mix ran 1 1/2 miles on the turf in 2:26.78 and paid $3.40, $2.20 and $2.10 as the 7-10 favorite. She joined Typecast (1972) and Petite Ile (1990) as the only females to win.

It was Stevens' third career win in the Sunset and first since 2001.

Dhaamer returned $2.20 and $2.10, while Extensive was another 6 3/4 lengths back in third and paid $3.40 to show.

The victory, worth $60,000, increased Marketing Mix's career earnings to 1,869,518, with 10 wins in 18 starts.

"It's nice to win the last Sunset," trainer Tom Proctor said. "A lot of good horses have won it. It means something to me."

Live racing returns to the track in the fall before it is set to close permanently in December.
