West LA Worker Dies After Apparent Trench Accident

WEST LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — An man who was found unconscious in a trench in Westwood has died, authorities said Friday.

The rescue effort first began around 9:30 a.m. along the 2000 block of Malcolm Ave and involved an adult male worker — possibly with a private plumbing company — who fell into a hole approximately 20 feet deep, 8 feet long, and about two feet wide, according to Erik Scott with the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Crews determined the victim “was beyond medical help” at 10:49 a.m. The Coroner’s office will determine the official cause of his death, authorities said.

Nearly 50 responders were on scene, including Urban Search & Rescue (USAR) personnel.

The victim may have suffered electric shock, according to Scott.
