LOS ALAMITOS (CBSLA.com) — The bodies of two firefighters killed in last month’s fast-moving wildfire in Arizona were flown back to Southern California Wednesday.
A Memorial Ramp Ceremony honoring Kevin Woyjeck, 21, and 20-year-old Christopher MacKenzie began at 1 p.m. at the Joint Forces Training Base in Los Alamitos.
The men were among 19 firefighters with the Granite Mountain Interagency Hotshot Crew who died June 30 near Yarnell.
Woyjeck, the son of Los Angeles County Fire Captain Joe Woyjeck, was a former member of the Los Angeles County Fire Department’s Explorer Post 9 and worked as an EMT for Care Ambulance Service.
MacKenzie graduated from Hemet High School in 2001.
The California Emergency Management Agency, the state National Guard and the California Fire Foundation’s Last Alarm Service Team were coordinating the event.
Following the ramp ceremony, firefighters will lead a procession as the bodies are transported for individual burial.
A memorial service for all 19 men was held in Prescott, Ariz., on Tuesday.
