Hawthorne Police Sergeant Killed In Motorcycle Crash On 105 Freeway In Lynwood

LYNWOOD (CBSLA.com) — A Hawthorne police sergeant was killed Monday in a crash on the eastbound 105 Freeway in Lynwood.

Leonard Luna, 42, was on his personal motorcycle, headed to Long Beach to pick up his service bike from the repair shop when the accident happened west of Long Beach Boulevard shortly before 5:30 p.m.

Luna, who had been with the department for 10 years, was transported to the hospital in critical condition, but later died.

"(His co-workers) are visibly shaken," Lt. Scott Swain said. "We just went through this two years ago with Officer Andrew Garton, who was also killed on a police motorcycle. It almost feels like we're just getting back to some normalcy from that and now this happened."

Traffic was snarled for hours on the freeway during the investigation.

No other details have been released.
