Daughter Of LAPD Sergeant Arrested In Fatal Gardena Hit-And-Run

GARDENA (CBSLA.com) — Police confirmed Thursday the suspect arrested in a fatal hit-and-run is the daughter of a veteran Los Angeles Police Department officer.

Vanessa Marie Yanez, 22, was arrested Wednesday and booked on charges of vehicular manslaughter, perjury, filing a false police report and a felony hit and run.

Investigators believe Yanez, daughter of Sgt. Arturo Yanez who has been on the force about 30 years, was driving the car that struck Jesse Dotson on June 26 around 9:50 p.m.

Dotson was lawfully riding his bicycle eastbound on El Segundo Boulevard near Vermont Avenue when he was hit. The driver fled from the scene.

Dotson was transported with serious head injuries to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center where he died on June 29.

That same day officials located the suspect's vehicle at a home less than a mile from where the accident occurred after a law enforcement officer matched a description with a vehicle Yanez had reported missing.

Yanez has been released with a promise to appear in court.

LAPD investigators told KNX1070 there is an internal investigation into whether Sgt. Yanez was aware of the incident.
