Woman Pronounced Dead At Jail Facility In Long Beach

LONG BEACH (CBSLA.com) — Authorities Saturday continued to investigate the circumstances surrounding an in-custody death of a woman in Long Beach.

The Long Beach Press-Telegram reports that an unidentified woman in her 40s was found unresponsive in a cell at the Long Beach City Women's Jail on Friday morning, several hours after her arrest.

"The female was arrested on June 27, 2013, at approximately 2:35 p.m., at Long Beach Police Headquarters," a statement issued by the Long Beach Police Department said. "During a routine warrant check, officers discovered she had outstanding misdemeanor warrants and was taken into custody."

The death marked the third to occur in the past two months while a person was in the custody of the Long Beach Police Department. Last month, a man died after going into medical distress. A month earlier, a woman in a jail holding cell also died.

The statement said the death is under investigation by the department's homicide detectives and the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office as is the case in all instances of in-custody deaths.

Police said there were no signs of foul play, according to the newspaper.

No further information was immediately available.
