Standoff Suspect Found Dead After Shootout At Willowbrook Home

WILLOWBROOK ( — A man was found dead in the attic of a Willowbrook home Wednesday morning, roughly 13 hours he exchanged gunfire with police.

A standoff began around 7 p.m. Tuesday in the 2200 block of 117th Street near Mona Boulevard when three officers went to the residence for a probation check and detained several people, Los Angeles police said.

After the arrests were made, the officers went back inside the home, where they were confronted by the armed suspect hiding in the attic.

A shootout occurred and an LAPD officer was shot in the face. He underwent surgery overnight and was listed in stable but serious condition in the ICU at St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood, according to the LAPD.

“He was struck in the jaw area, and it’s going to be an extensive recovery period for him, but we expect him to recover,” Chief Charlie Beck said.

One of two probation officers at the scene was grazed by a bullet in the leg. He was treated at the scene and a local hospital and was released. The other officer was not injured, officials said.

It was unknown what time the suspect died, but an LAPD SWAT team shot tear gas into the home’s attic around 6:45 a.m. Wednesday in an effort to force the suspect out.

Shortly before 9 a.m., officers entered the home and discovered him dead with multiple gunshot wounds, likely from the shootout.

“He is deceased, and at this point this becomes a continuing investigation for both our force investigation division who will investigate the officer-involved shooting, as well as our robbery-homicide division who will conduct a criminal investigation into what transpired here last night,” Lt. Andy Neiman said.

The suspect’s identity and criminal background were not released by authorities.

Police say the incident is unrelated to Tuesday’s shooting that injured two detectives in the Mid-City area.
