RANCHO CUCAMONGA (CBSLA.com) — Authorities Friday announced the arrest of a suspect in connection to the 1996 cold case murder of a 20-year-old man.

Gabriel Ralph Bencomo, 35, was arrested in Riverside Thursday for the murder of Joseph Anthony Anguiano, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department said.

According to authorities, Anguiano was fatally shot in his front yard in the 8800 block of Hermosa Avenue in Rancho Cucamonga on Aug. 4, 1996.

"Detectives investigated the homicide in 1996 and developed numerous leads," Det. Jerry Davenport said in a statement. " But the homicide investigation remained unsolved."

The Sheriff's Cold Case Team reopened the investigation in 2010 and used DNA evidence to identify Bencomo as a suspect. He was 19 years old at the time of the crime, officials said.

Bencomo is being held on $1 million at the West Valley Detention Center.

He is scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Rancho Superior Court.
