Man, 23, Arrested For Allegedly Killing Family Cat, Dog With Homemade Spear

CASTAIC (CBSLA.com) — A Castaic man has been arrested for allegedly killing his family's pets -- a dog and cat -- with a homemade spear.

Jared Foster was being held Thursday for suspicion of felony cruelty to animals, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department

The 23-year-old was arrested around 10 p.m. Wednesday at his family's home in the 32700 block of N. Ridge Tip Lane, officials said.

Authorities were called by Foster's brother who said he returned to the home and found the pets dead. He said his brother had been acting suspiciously. Foster's brother, fearing for his safety, left the house and called deputies with the Santa Clarita Valley Station.

Deputies found a dead dog in the backyard that had been set on fire. The family cat was also discovered dead inside the residence along with a large amount of blood.

"Shortly thereafter, deputies discovered that the suspect had made a spear out of a broomstick and a large kitchen knife by taping the two together," Lt. Randy Harris said. "He apparently used the spear and possibly an arrow to kill the cat and dog."

Foster is being held on $20,000 bail.  He is due in court for arraignment on Monday at 8:30 a.m.
