MISSION VIEJO (CBSLA.com) — An Orange County Sheriff’s deputy was ejected from his patrol vehicle following a crash early Monday morning.

His cruiser struck a lamp post around 3 a.m. on Marguerite Parkway and Alarcon in Mission Viejo, officials said.

The 13-year veteran, whose name has not been released, was transported to Mission Hospital in critical condition.

Orange County Sheriff’s Captain Jim Rudy told KNX1070’s Pete Demetriou his condition improved to serious.

“I did visit the hospital and did meet with him. He was responsive when I spoke to him,” Rudy said.

The accident is under investigation.
