Man Dies In South LA Fire At Auto Repair Business

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Authorities Sunday said a man was killed in an overnight fire at an automotive repair business in South Los Angeles.

Firefighters responded to the 8000 block of South San Pedro Street around 1:36 a.m. after a passerby reported visible smoke from the one-story building, according to LAFD Public Information Officer Brian Humphrey.

Upon arriving on scene, about 30 firefighters battled the flames inside the building. Firefighters also rescued an unidentified man from the smoke-filled room.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. No one else was injured.

Authorities say it appears the man pulled from the fire had been living in the business with pack-rat conditions for some time.

Investigators believe the death is accidental and may have started by an alternative energy source.

The Los Angeles County Coroner's office is expected to determine an exact cause of death. No further information was immediately available.
