STUDIO CITY ( — Summer’s here…its time to enjoy your back yard!

Michael Murphy, an In-house Designer at Lamps Plus visited the KCAL9 studios Friday to show viewers how to create the perfect outdoor living space for your home.

He also discussed the three key elements to consider when hosting a party, no matter what size space you have or how many people you plan to host.

Creating the Perfect Outdoor Living Space for Your Home

• Determine how you’d like to use your outdoor space, keeping in mind what is practical for the size and type space that you have (balcony, patio, yard, etc.):

o Lounging – such as having a cup of coffee and reading your newspaper, etc.
o Outdoor Dining – such as having a full meal at an outdoor table
o Entertaining a group or hosting an outdoor party

• Once you know your planned use, evaluate what you already own and what else you need for the space. No matter what size space or how many people you plan to host, there are three key elements to consider

o Seating – such as Adirondack chairs, lounge chairs, seating for tables
o Tabletop space – consider using a high-top table with chairs, or a more traditional table. You can also pair seating with an outdoor coffee or console table to use for serving.
o Lighting – include a mix of garden & path lighting, string lights to create atmosphere. Outdoor lamps are also available including combo lamp/table pieces

• Finishing touches – decorative touches in your outdoor space are just as important as in your home

o Lanterns – depending on your preference, both electric and candle lanterns can be used to set the mood for outdoor dining and entertaining in the evening
o Decorative outdoor wall art can also add interest to an exterior wall or fence
o Mix and match outdoor plant containers and plant stands for a fun, eclectic look or choose one color or finish to coordinate with other accessories
o Outdoor pillows – the outdoor fabrics are better than ever and easy to clean.
