1 Killed, 1 Arrested In Riverside Officer-Involved Shooting

RIVERSIDE (CBSLA.com) — Police Wednesday were investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred at a Riverside gas station.

The shooting happened 11 p.m. Tuesday at a Chevron gas station located at 3476 Van Buren Blvd., officials said.

According to police, two suspects were first involved in a hit-and-run crash on the 91 Freeway near the Madison Street exit. They then exited the freeway and hit a center divider, blocking the northbound lanes of Van Buren at the 91.

"When the officer stopped to investigate, he contacted the driver of the vehicle and saw the passenger walking away toward a gas station," Sgt. Dan Russell said.

At the same time, witnesses called authorities to report that the suspect had a gun.

"They called out to him, he fled back around the front of the station and then he was confronted by officers. At that point, it was reported that he pointed a hand gun at the officers and an officer-involved shooting occurred," Sgt. David Amador of the Riverside Police Department said.

The unidentified suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, 21-year-old Clifton Carl Chapple, was arrested by the California Highway Patrol on suspicion of hit-and-run and driving under the influence.

No officers were injured.
