If you are a fan of architecture, then you simply must make arrangements to tour one of the most spectacular estates in Southern California, and perhaps the country. Sunnylands Estate was built during the height of the midcentury modern movement, bringing a classic yet contemporary look to a vast and luxurious estate in Rancho Mirage, California. Sunnylands was built for Walter and Leonore Annenberg, best known in the publishing world and as philanthropists. The home was designed by famous architect A. Quincy Jones and it is one of the most perfect examples of his unique style.
A visit to Sunnylands will showcase all of the amazing features of this beautiful home. Jones was known for integrating homes into the landscape, and he did just that with Sunnylands. In addition, he was also known for his use of “statement roofs,” bringing bold architectural choices to any home he built. There are large overhangs used to shield the area from the intense sun, and huge walls of glass to keep the rooms bright. All of the trellises, beams and other structural work is exposed, and there are Mexican lava stone walls helping keep the bold style. And, of course, the statement roof makes a bold statement with it’s pink pyramid, designed to match the glow of the sunset.
Many famous faces have been seen within the walls of Sunnylands, from Queen Elizabeth to Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra, Jimmy Stewart, President Clinton and so many more. Now you, too, can tour this incredible estate. Guided tours are offered exclusively through their online ticketing system, and are extremely limited. However, this tour is entirely worth it. It is an amazing look at one of the most opulent and luxurious homes ever built.
For a luxurious destination like this, you need an equally luxurious car. Travel in your 2013 C300 Luxury Sedan from Mercedes-Benz of Encino. You’ll love the comfort and elegance that only Mercedes-Benz provides, and you’ll arrive in the same style and luxury befitting someone that is going to be visiting the great Sunnylands Estate.
