Saugus Man Accused Of Using Internet To Steal From The Lovelorn

SANTA CLARITA (CBSLA.com) — Detectives with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station have taken a man into custody they say used several popular dating websites to entice women he would eventually steal from.

Detectives say they are aware of "a number" of victims and believe there might be others yet to come forward.

To locate unsuspecting victims and to find women who are hesitant to report they were scammed, detectives have released the man's photograph.

Officials accuse 39-year-old Jeffrey Elvington, a Saugus resident, of being the serial burglar. He was arrested on February 14 -- Valentine's Day -- and charged with felony burglary.

A case against Elvington has been presented to the LA County District Attorney's Office. Authorities believe Elvington was allegedly scamming women for two years -- or more -- before being caught.

Since those charges were filed, detectives have learned of more alleged crimes. Officials said Elvington stole a victim's credit card information and used it to purchase an item.

Elvington was arrested for a second time Tuesday on charges related to grand theft and burglary. He was released pending further investigation, according to authorities.

Authorities said most of the victims have been from the Santa Clarita Valley area.

They maintain he often told elaborate tales about his career or background to make himself more desirable. In one case he apparently implied he was a personal chef to the stars. He allegedly told another victim he was working for the government and the military in the special forces.

KCAL9's Juan Fernandez knocked on the front door of Elvington's last known address but no one answered.
