Coast Guard Stops Boat Carrying $1M Worth Of Pot In OC

BALBOA ISLAND (CBSLA.com) —The U.S. Coast Guard tried to stop and board a sailboat, which was later found to be carrying at least 80 bales of marijuana worth $1 million, in Newport Beach early Monday morning.

A crew doing routine patrols noticed the boat enter Newport Harbor near Balboa Island around 12:45 a.m.

As the officials approached, the pilot veered to the right and ran the boat onto the beach near Ruby Avenue. Two men fled on foot.

Authorities then discovered the massive amount of pot.

No arrests have been made.

Resident Todd Talbot told KCAL9's Stacey Butler that the island held its annual parade on Sunday.

"It was a big day on the island. Streets were packed. It was a day you figure you could get away with something," he said.
