The Huntington Gardens: So Much More Than Just Gardens
By Deb Flomberg
What could be more romantic than a stroll through one of the most beautiful gardens in the world? Visit the Huntington Botanical Gardens and you’ll be amazed at the sheer variety of plant life that call this gorgeous destination home. Once you’re done strolling through the garden, you can visit the huge art collection or wander the library. In fact, you can easily make a full day of this wonderful destination in San Marino.
The Gardens cover about 207 acres, 120 of which are open to visitors. You can find more than 14,000 different varieties of plants at more than a dozen different areas. One of the most spectacular is the Lily Ponds, which was the first garden established back in 1904. These stunning ponds are home to turtles, bullfrogs, koi and a ton of amazing aquatic plants. There is a large bronze statue of St. Francis, the patron saint of animals, watching over the ponds and you’ll find a variety of trees that are never normally seen in California. You also simply must visit the Rose Gardens, originally planted in 1908. From the 18th century French stone tempietto and statue to the 19th century shrub roses, these are some of the most amazing roses in the world.
In addition to the Gardens, there is a huge collection of art at the Huntington Art Collections, including a huge selection of 18th and 19th century British paintings and sculpture. You’ll find some famous works here, including Thomas Gainsborough’s Blue Boy and John Constable’s View on the Stour Near Dedham. You’ll also find a great selection of 18th Century French sculpture, porcelain, furniture and tapestries.
As if that wasn’t enough, you can also peruse the Huntington Library, which is one of the largest research libraries in the United States. It is also home to a huge selection of rare books including the manuscript of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, a copy of the Gutenberg Bible on vellum, and a huge collection of early editions of Shakespeare’s works.
For this amazing day trip, you’ll want to arrive in the SLK350 Roadster from Mercedes-Benz of Encino. It is the perfect car to start your romantic day. Simply put the top down and cruise in style with your honey as you prepare for a day strolling the gardens, the museum and the library together.
