LA Homeowner Says His 'Large Gun' Helped Thwart Attempted Burglary

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A homeowner in the Wilshire-Crest area of Los Angeles credits his quick thinking — and his "large gun" — for helping him stave off three apparent burglars.

KNX 1070's Ed Mertz reports two out of three suspects were still on the loose Thursday after what appeared to be a botched burglary attempt.

Armed LA Homeowner Thwarts Attempted Burglary

The male homeowner, who asked not to be identified, said he was taking out the trash Wednesday afternoon when he saw three young males jump the rear wall of his property on Redondo Boulevard, just north of Pico.

"I have a large gun, and I was thinking, 'Why are they in my yard?'" he said.

As the three men ran toward him, the homeowner said he scrambled into his house and grabbed his firearm. Unsure if they were also armed, he confronted the suspects.

The man said he stopped one of the suspects, who reportedly told the homeowner, "I'm just a kid." The others ran away.

"He got down, I told him to spread your legs, spread your arms, don't move, and we'll be fine," the homeowner said. "And he said, 'I won't move.'"

No shots were fired during the incident, Mertz reported.

LAPD officers soon swarmed the scene and a police helicopter circled above the scene, which police were initially calling a home burglary. However, since the homeowner stopped the suspects in his yard, police said the pending charge against the two outstanding suspects is trespassing.

For the homeowner, however, the incident is one he won't soon forget.

"Wow....scary," he said.
