CAMARILLO (AP) — A big Southern California wildfire has been reduced to ashes and embers but authorities say it’s still a threat.

Mike Lindbery of the Ventura County Fire Department says the blaze in the Camarillo area is 90 percent contained and should be fully surrounded Tuesday evening. Cooler weather helped prevent its spread.

Lindbery says there’s no active flame but there’s hot ground and smoldering hotspots such as roots and logs. Firefighters want to mop those up before the weather heats up again.

The fire burned nearly 44 square miles and at its peak threatened thousands of homes. Initial reports said it damaged 15 homes but Lindbery says a reassessment determined no homes burned. The fire did destroy 10 outbuildings, such as barns, and damaged 12 outbuildings and commercial properties.

Officials said eight firefighters were injured.
