Off-Duty Officer Reportedly Shot In The Head While Pumping Gas In Colton

COLTON (CBSLA.com) — An 0ff-duty officer was shot in the head Thursday evening while pumping gas in Colton, according to witnesses.

Authorities would not confirm the shooting.

Two suspects reportedly shot at the officer -- believed to work for the California Department of Corrections -- without provocation.

The incident reportedly occurred about 9:10 p.m. in the 2000 block of S. Iowa Avenue.

The suspects were reportedly driving a 20004 blue Dodge Durango.

Witnesses said they heard about six shots. It is unclear if the officer was hit multiple times. But witnesses told CBS2's Adrianna Weingold they believed the victim was definitely shot more than once.

Cecilia Aboytes said she saw a car pull up and about thirty seconds after the officer pulled in she said the suspects asked for directions and began firing.

Witness Vanessa Hernandez said "I saw a man on the ground, near the first set of pumps, and he was very bloody. I got back in the car and turned around."

It was unclear if suspects were in custody.
