Man Rescued After Being Crushed By 1K Pounds Of Granite

FONTANA (CBSLA.com) — A man Wednesday was recovering from serious injuries after approximately 1,000 pounds of granite fell on top of him in a shipping container.

The accident happened around 5 p.m. Tuesday at a shipping facility in the 11600 block of Industrial Avenue in Fontana, the San Bernardino County Fire Department said.

Witnesses say employees were unloading large slabs of granite from a 20-foot container when the load suddenly shifted for an unknown reason.

"A worker in the back of the container quickly dove to the far corner as the granite began to fall on and around him," spokesman Marc Peebles said.

The victim was able to tell rescuers about his location as they cut through the metal container and used air bags to stabilize the load.

It took firefighters one hour and 15 minutes to free the unidentified man.

He was airlifted "to a local trauma center for evaluation of serious, but non-life threatening injuries," Peebles said.

The accident is under investigation by CAL-OSCHA and the Fontana Police Department.
