Boyle Heights Standoff Ends In Deadly Deputy-Involved Shooting

BOYLE HEIGHTS (CBSLA.com) — A carjacking and barricade suspect was killed early Tuesday morning in a deputy-involved shooting following a standoff in Boyle Heights.

The fatal shooting happened in the 500 block of Fairview Street around 3 a.m., the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department said.

According to authorities, the suspect reportedly carjacked a vehicle in East Los Angeles around 10:30 p.m. Monday and led deputies on a pursuit to Boyle Heights.

After bailing from the vehicle, the unidentified suspect exchanged gunfire with deputies.

He then kicked in the door of a nearby apartment where a man and woman were living and barricaded himself inside, according to officials.

The couple was able to escape out of a bathroom window to safety, authorities said.

The suspect was killed after the LASD's Special Enforcement Bureau Team shot tear gas into the apartment and entered the unit nearly four hours later, officials said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The shooting is under investigation. No deputies were injured.
