Fire Guts Downtown Fabric Company

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A fire gutted a two-story building owned by a fabric company in downtown early Thursday morning.

The fire broke out just after 2 a.m. at Sharp Fabric, located at 710 E. 7th Street, in the garmet district.

When the Los Angeles Fire Department arrived on scene, the building was fully engulfed, officials said.

"We responded with a total of 18 fire companies, five rescue ambulances, five battalion command teams," Asst. Fire Chief Emile Mack told KNX1070's Pete Demetriou.

Firefighters were forced to operate in defensive mode outside the structure after flames shot through the roof. It took crews more than 90 minutes later to contain the fire.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

"We have our arson section, they are on scene, they are going to be investigating to try and determine the cause of the fire," Mack said.

No injuries were reported.

Firefighters are expected to remain on scene through at least mid-morning Thursday.
