Following Death Of WeHo Man, Healthcare Group To Offer Free Meningitis Vaccinations

WEST HOLLYWOOD (CBSLA.com) — The AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) Sunday announced that they will provide free meningitis vaccines for anyone who believes they have been exposed or anyone who thinks they are at risk.

They will start the free vaccination program starting Monday, April 15th.

City officials put the plan into action after 33-year-old attorney and realtor Brett Shaad succumbed to the disease.

An outbreak in New York City has killed at least seven men.

Vaccines will be provided at AHF Pharmacy locations in West Hollywood (8212 Santa Monica Blvd. 90046), Hollywood (6210 Sunset Blvd. 90028) and the AHF Hollywood Men's Wellness Center (1300 N. Vermont Ave., Suite 407, 90027).

Cristy Fajardo, reporting for CBS2, went to West Hollywood to gauge reaction to the program.

Fajardo spoke to many residents who were grateful the vaccine was being offered and they told her the meningitis outbreak in NYC is not far from their minds.

Robert Erickson said Shaad's age underscores how important the vaccine is. "I say you need to get it, if you haven't gotten it already. It's something in the air, we don't know what the symptoms are. We get a cough or a headache and think nothing of it. But it's obviously something that happens very quickly."
