Woman Hurt After Elderly Driver Plows Vehicle Into Busy Santa Monica Sidewalk

SANTA MONICA (CBSLA.com) — A woman was injured after an 89-year-old driver lost control of his SUV and plowed into a busy Santa Monica sidewalk Friday.

The incident, which was captured live on KCAL9 cameras, happened near the corner of 2nd Street and Arizona Avenue.

Resident Angel Delarosa said he saw the vehicle hit one of the many pedestrians in its path.

"We were walking toward the intersection and this car hit (another) vehicle and veered off to the sidewalk," he said. "(He hit the pedestrian and she) landed on the hood and then he went down the sidewalk and hit that tree and she flew off."

Carlos Lopez, who also witnessed the 2003 Santa Monica farmers market crash that killed 10 people, said the victim asked him to hold her hand as she laid on the sidewalk.

"She said, 'I think I have a bunch of broken bones, but I can't feel anything.' I said, stay calm…don't move…don't do anything," he said.

The woman was walking with friends, who narrowly escaped being hit.

"They were able to scoot out of the way and she was right in the middle of the sidewalk and that's when he ran her over," said Delarosa.

Both the woman and the driver were rushed to the hospital.
