Overnight Vigil Held In Los Angeles As Cardinals Elect New Pope

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels was host to an overnight vigil that focused prayer towards the cardinals as they elect a new pope in the Vatican.

The vigil began around 7 p.m. on Monday as Catholics from around Los Angeles gathered in prayer. The associate pasture at the cathedral says that the prayers were focused towards the guidance of the cardinals in their decision.

The pasture believes that this is an opportunity for the church to produce positive headlines after scandals about sex abuse, cover ups, and corruption tainted the church's image.

There are currently no known frontrunners for the election, but Catholics agree that the significance of the pope's appointment is paramount.

"I hope the pope will bring the faith back to a lot of people," Parishioner Eric Chun said. "I think a lot of people have lost their faith in the church, and I think the church is really important for everybody."

The vigil concludes on Tuesday with a 7 a.m. mass.
