3 Men Seriously Burned In Calabasas 'Secret Drug Lab' Explosion

MALIBU (CBSLA.com) — Three young men were severely burned in a "secret drug lab" explosion in Calabasas Monday, according to the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's Station.

The blast went off around 5:10 p.m. at a residence in the 600 block of Crater Camp Drive, near Malibu State Park.

The victims, ages 20, 22 and 24, were airlifted to the hospital with second- and third-degree burns to their upper torsos, arms and faces.

Fire investigators believe the men were using chemicals to make "marijuana butter."

One of the victims was the grandson of an elderly couple who owns the damaged property.

Neighbor Jim Albrecht said he's known the married duo for years.

"It's pretty heartwrenching to think that such lovely people may have encountered such serious problems," he said.

A Hazmat team, a bomb squad, firefighters and the sheriff's department were all investigating the home for hours.
