NEWPORT BEACH (CBSLA.com) — Investigators Monday were working to identify a woman who was found dead along the Newport Beach shoreline.

KNX 1070's Mike Landa reports the female victim was discovered around 6 a.m. by two people walking along the waterline by a lifeguard tower near Highland Street and West Ocean Front.

"The Newport Beach Police Department responded to a call of a female lying face down on the beach near Tower 71," police spokeswoman Cathy Lowe told KNX 1070 NEWSRADIO.

No weapons were recovered from the scene, Lowe said.

The victim was described as an Asian woman in her mid-20s, roughly 5'2" with a thin build.

A police spokesperson would not comment on whether the victim was clothed or whether her body had washed up at the location near the mouth of the Santa Ana River.

Residents in the upscale beach community were stunned.

"It is just shocking," Ron Schwalbe said. "It is always so quiet here. People walk their dogs here."
