Suspect In Girl Scout Cookie Caper Arrested

PHELAN (CBSLA.com) — Authorities have arrested a 20-year-old Phelan man on suspicion of stealing hundreds of dollars from Girl Scouts selling cookies outside a supermarket.

Colin Sawyer was identified as the suspect in the surveillance video that was released to the media following Sunday's theft at Stater Bros. Supermarket in Phelan, Riverside County Sheriff's officials said.

Sawyer was spotted by two deputies at a gas station near Phelan Road and Baldy Mesa and was taken into custody without incident Monday night.

The theft happened Sunday at about 6:50 p.m., as the Girl Scouts from Troop 1303 began packing up their supplies to go home for the night. Sawyer is suspected of walking up to their table, taking the bag containing money from their sales for the day and running.

One of the Girl Scouts ran after him, but fell and suffered minor scrapes and scratches.

More than $460 in cash was estimated stolen.
