Donate A Bra For A Good Cause

BRENTWOOD (CBSLA.com) — Do you have a bra that's too big, small or just no longer your style?

Instead of hiding it away in the back of your closet, donate it for a good cause!

The Bra Recyclers, which was started by Arizona resident Elaine Birks-Mitchell, is a textile recycling company that collects new or used bras and gives them to women in transitional shelters and breast cancer survivors.

Susan Tabar, the owner of Uniquek lingerie shop in Brentwood, has been an "ambassador" for the Bra Recyclers for a number of years.

Her boutique is one of many drop-off locations in Southern California that gathers donations.

"(We get about) 25, 26 bras (every month)," she said. "When I get a boxful, I ship it on my own."

Tabar said as long as the bra is in working condition, it can be given to women and girls worldwide.

"When they wash it and bring it, I look at it and say, 'Oh my God, these are so nice and so clean, and it's so nice to send to people who are in need,'" she said.

Last year, with the help of collection sites and charities across the country, 16,000 bras were given to women.

"It gives me happiness to feel that there's a little part I can do, and I hope I can do more," said Tabar.
